If you have been following me, you know I love my body oil. It’s a wonderful mix of cocoa butter and coconut oil. Well, the cooler weather is now here, and I’m yet again battling chapped lips. I recently found myself constantly running to my oil in the bathroom to grace my lips with it.
Since it’s impractical to carry a quick melting oil with me everywhere, I explored the internet again to find a successful formula similar to my oil I love, but for twist-tube lip balm. Since I’m familiar with successfully making oil-based products and beeswax candles, I quickly ordered some local beeswax and BPA-free, made in the USA twist-tube kit when I found a recipe that seemed like it would work and hold up to pocket carrying.
Let’s Get Started:
You’ll need the following supplies:
- Double-boiler
If you don’t have one, make one! Use a 3-quart pot, some water, and a glass or metal bowl that’s big enough to fit in the pot without touching the boiling water. This helps prevent burning the oils, wax, and butters when melting, which can ruin your product and cost more money.
- 2 parts Beeswax (local is best)
- 1 part Solid coconut oil
- 2 parts Cocoa butter
- Twist-tube lip balm tubes (get a kit)
- Silicone utensil for mixing
I only made a small batch for personal use, so I’m only using ratios in this recipe. No matter how much you make, always use the same ratio.
1) Melt all the ingredients together in your double-boiler.
2) Pour into the twist-tubes.
3) Allow to cool until you see a center hole develop.
4) Pour a small amount of your melted mixture to fill the center hole.
5) Allow to cool completely before use.
This formula passed my 3+ hour pocket test without losing consistency and melting.
