This all natural moisturizer is very easy to make, store, and use. You’ll want to gather all your items before you get started. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 large pot
- 1 large metal bowl that will sit in the pot without touching the bottom of the pot
- 1 glass measuring cup
- 1 cup or larger heat safe glass storage container with lid (small Pyrex bowl is perfect)
- 1 large spoon
- Water
- 1/2 cup unrefined cocoa butter
- 1/2 cup unrefined coconut oil
1) Begin by filling the large pot with enough water to fill the bottom of the pot about 2 inches deep.
You want enough water to create steam, but you also don’t want the water to touch the bottom of the large metal bowl you’ll set on top of the pot. This method acts like a double boiler without needing to buy an actual double boiler. It helps maintain just enough heat to melt your ingredients without scorching them.
2) Put your pot of water on the stove and turn the burner to medium low heat.
The trick is to heat the water low and slow. You want steam, not pressure. Don’t rush the process, or you may possibly ruin the integrity of your ingredients. Your water should be steamy and creating small bubbles.
3) Add 1/2 cup of coconut oil to your large metal bowl.
4) Add 1/2 cup of cocoa butter to your large metal bowl
5) Place metal bowl on top of the large pot on the stove.
6) Stir the ingredients with your spoon until they have melted and are well blended. Do not let it come to a boil.
7) Put some warm water your glass storage container to preheat the glass before pouring your ingredients into it.
8) Once your glass storage container is heated above room temperature, pour out the water and dry it by hand.
9) Carefully pour your melted ingredients slowly into your glass storage container.
10) Cover your glass storage container with its lid and place it wherever you use your typical lotion to cool.
The ingredients will begin to harden as it cools. This is normal. You can soften it easily by running hot water over the covered glass storage container until your natural moisturizer begins to melt.
How to use: less is more! Use enough of your moisturizer to thinly coat your skin and rub in until absorbed.
You can use it on dry skin or after your shower or bath.
Hair: You can also use it as a deep conditioner by applying a small amount to the palm of your hands and working it into your scalp and strands.
